In order to decelerate climate change, Switzerland is aiming to reach net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050. Among the diverse efforts underway to reach this goal, permanent storage of industrial CO2 emissions in the geological subsurface of Switzerland is being evaluated. This presentation will provide an overview of the principles, advantages and risks of geological CO2 storage, and it will discuss the potential for this technology within the deep subsurface of Switzerland. Finally, plans will be presented for an upcoming pilot project to inject a small amount of CO2 into a saline sedimentary aquifer in northern Switzerland. This pilot project will allow the scientific community and administrative authorities in Switzerland to rehearse all the technical, logistical, legal and social acceptance tasks required to establish a large-scale CO2 storage site in the future.
